A covenant is not a contract. A contract is transactional — you give this, I give that. A covenant is relational — we commit to being for each other, regardless of what we get in return. It's a posture, not a payment plan.
Jesus invites us into a covenant way of life expressed in practices of gathering, welcoming, listening, and offering. These four practices are not four things we add to a busy life — they describe the kind of people we are trying to become together.
The CityWell Family Covenant is not a requirement for attending — everyone is always welcome, no covenant required. It is an invitation for those who want to root themselves in this community and commit to practicing the way of Jesus alongside others.
We commit to gathering regularly with our community — on Sundays and in Wells — because none of us can do this alone. Gathering is an act of trust. It says: I need you. The body needs me. We belong together.
Because God gathers us into a family… and none of us can do this alone.
We commit to practicing radical hospitality — welcoming the stranger, the skeptic, the wounded, the different, and the familiar with equal warmth. Because God welcomes all of us unconditionally through Jesus… and all of us need to know we belong.
We commit to listening — to God through Scripture and prayer, to one another in our conversations and conflicts, to our neighbors and the city. Because God listens to us… and listening is the first gift of deep relationship.
We commit to offering ourselves — our time, our resources, our gifts, our presence — to one another and to the world. Because God makes a complete self-offering to us in Jesus… and life is most beautiful when shared.
